Fixing the last of the broken links and learning to do a mass spider session

I've uploaded the second tutorial and I want to add it to the directory. This time, it's got a title and meta tags. I could spider it, but I'm going to add it by browsing the directory instead. I'll spider some sites for you later.

I login to my portal and go to the Hyperseek Administration Control Panel. I choose the Directory link next to the search box. This takes me to a very plain directory view. I'm going to browse through the directory until I get to where I want to add the link. Then I'm going to click Add Link to this Category near the top of the page. You'll see that this takes you to an interface that is very like the Add Link interface. The big difference is that you don't have to specify a directory because you started in the target directory. So I'm going to fill this box out just like the other one. Then I'll do the Updating dance and the tutorial will appear in my directory.

Now let's spider some links. Spidering the link will pull the information out of the title tag and meta tags so that you don't have to fill in those boxes when editing the submission. If I only have one link to spider, I'll go ahead and add it using the box there in the control panel. I'm patient while the spider goes out on to the net and gets the information I need. When it's successful, I'll see the same set up that people see when they submit a site to my directory. I choose the correct category and fill out all the other information and click the button to submit the site. It will be added to the submissions database. I click Go to get back to the control panel and I see that there are submission waiting -- the one I just spidered along with several others.

When I add the submitted sites, I see that one of them is from one of our illustrious forum moderators. She's added it to Visit Your Neighbors, but I also want it to appear in the Moderators category. I scroll down to find the second category that I want, press and hold my Control key, and click that second category. Now both categories are highlighted and the link will appear in both places.

I now have 5 links in my Meet the Moderators category. They seem to be arranged in reverse order of entry, so the newest ones are at the top. I personally don't like that, so I'm going to switch it to alphabetical order. I click on Configuration Settings in the black bar at the top of the page. Just about half way down the page, I find the subheading: Category / Subcategory Display/Options. The first question is "How would you like categories and subcategories sorted?" I'm going to choose Both Alphabetized. While I'm here, I'm going to make a couple more changes to this page. Moving down just a few boxes, I'm going to fix the email address in the "Enter the No Documents Found Message for Searches". Then I'll fix the grammar error in the next box (it should be "its" not "it's") and finally I'm going to edit the message at the "Enter the No More Subcategories message" box. If someone has a good one, please share it. I'm just deleting it entirely. Now, to get to the crux of my complaint, I'm going to drop down to the section that asks "How would you like CATEGORY listings sorted" and choose Sort Alphabetically by Title. Now I'll save the changes and do the Updating Dance.

Finally, I'm going to do a mass spidering session so that you can see how it works. I love this because I keep Notepad open all the time to collect links as I wander about on the web or read email. I'm always pasting links in there. When I've collected twenty or so, I can spider them in all at once. Here's how: Next to the Spider box, there is a link that says Spider More. Click it to go to a large text area that you can paste any number of links into. Click the Spider It button. The results will be listed on a non-editable page. Look them over for signs of trouble - spammed out keywords or descriptions, or, most importantly, missing titles. If the title tag is missing, you will not be able to use the listing you just spidered, so don't delete it from your Notepad document until you are sure that the link is safely spidered. After you've given them the once over, click Go. You will see in the top bar of the Control Panel that there are now spidered links waiting for you to edit and add to your database. Click the link and you're taken to an editing window, exactly like the one you see if you are processing multiple submissions. So from here on out, it's just like we learned in the previous tutorial. (Don't forget to do the Updating Dance when you finish adding those spidered links.) If one of your links was missing the title tag, there won't be a way for you to edit the record. Click the Delete It (or Kill It) box next to the link and be sure to press the button to process that request.

Now, I have a link that I need to edit. People can supposedly submit changes to their sites, but I haven't found out how yet. I'll bet it's a plugin I haven't added yet. This change came to me via email. So, from the Control Panel, I'm going to click on the Directory link and navigate to the Category where the listing exists. Next to each of the listings, you see links for [Edit] [Delete] [Feature Site] and [Review Site]. Delete is self- explanatory. We're going to use the Edit link now. Clicking it brings up a new, small window. You can edit anything about the link here. I'm just adding a line to the description. I click Change Entry, then Return. The small popup window goes away and if I refresh the page (giving the database a little time to make the change), I'll see my changes. I didn't have to do the Updating Dance for this change because I didn't move the link to a different category, but... it never hurts to do the dance so I will anyway :)

Now, I'm going to talk to you a little bit about 4 other pages you need to edit. You will find them in your public_html directory when you FTP to your portal site. The files are:

  • thanks.html
  • search.html
  • getlisted.html
  • bad_ip.html
  • badwords.html
You can change the wording, the style of the page, add affiliate links, whatever you want. But all changes to these files, unlike the other Hyperseek pages, will be done via FTP. If you aren't making any major changes to the look and feel of your portal, you can probably leave them alone except to change the link at the bottom of the page to point to your portal's home page. The current link yields a 404. I've done that and uploaded mine via FTP. Your FTP login is in the welcome email that Shane sent you about your portal. It's a quick fix, so go ahead and do it, then pour yourself a cool one. It's been a good day in the portal business! Your site is now basically ready to open to the world. You can upgrade look and feel as you go, or you can keep working on that and wait to open. It's up to you!
