Changed Categories Names

I got a request to explain how you can change category / sub-category names. "Do I really have to delete them and start over? It seems like such a waste of time to do this."

All I can say to that is -- you bet it does! So I've done some playing around. Here's how you can do it if you haven't set up any sub-categories yet.

  1. Set up a new category with the desired name. So if your category was named "Literature" and you wanted it to be named "Literature and Mythology", the first step is to set up the new category named "Literature and Mythology." Be sure that you do the updating dance before you move on to step 2.
  2. In your Hyperseek Admin panel, click Database Manager. Look about halfway down that page at the box that says: If the category was: You need to paste the EXACT name of the old category into this box. (I highly recommend cutting and pasting for this step. Make sure that you don't include any trailing spaces - if you are using MSIE, you will probably have to manually delete some.) In my example, I would type (or paste): Literature
  3. Click the link that says: Change and a popup box will appear that shows you the categories you have set up. Highlight the one that you want to change your links over to. In my example, I would highlight: Literature and Mythology Now, if you are like me, you are looking for a button to press in that popup window. After all, the other popups in Hyperseek have them. Apparently, the Hyperseek team subscribes to the theory that consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds. All you have to do is highlight the one you want, then close the window manually. The correct category is in the box.
  4. Click the Change Category button.
  5. Go back to the Hyperseek Admin panel and do the updating dance.
  6. Voila! All the links you had in the original category have been moved into the new category. After you've verified that, you can delete the original, unwanted category.

The bad news is that this method will not move sub-categories when it moves links. You will have to follow this same routine to move each sub-categories (along with their links). The key is to set up the new category / sub-category structure before you do anything else.
